Wet Room Versus Shower Tray: Which Suits You?

A bathroom floor has nowhere to hide. If the fall is wrong, water pools. If the waterproofing is incomplete, a beautifully finished tiled room can fail behind the surface. The choice between a wet room versus shower tray is therefore more than a styling decision: it determines the drainage design, build-up depth, tile specification and long-term performance of the room.

For some projects, a flush tiled wet room is the clear architectural choice. For others, a carefully selected low-profile tray gives the cleaner route to a reliable, luxurious shower. The right answer depends on the existing floor, the users of the space, the desired finish and the level of construction work the project can accommodate.

Wet room versus shower tray: the fundamental difference

A wet room treats the bathroom floor as part of the shower area. Water drains through a linear or point drain set within a formed fall, while the floor and walls are protected by a continuous waterproofing system beneath the tiled finish. There is no raised shower threshold and, in a fully open layout, often no conventional enclosure.

A shower tray is a pre-formed shower base, typically made from stone resin, acrylic or a composite material. It is installed with a dedicated waste and can sit above the floor, be recessed to create a low entry, or be tiled around. A glass screen or enclosure contains most of the water within that defined area.

Neither system is automatically superior. A wet room offers visual continuity and excellent accessibility, but asks more of the substrate, drainage planning and installation team. A tray provides a controlled shower zone and a predictable route for water, although it can interrupt a fully tiled floor design.

When a tiled wet room earns its place

A well-executed wet room feels considered rather than merely open-plan. Large-format porcelain can run continuously from the entrance to the shower, creating the calm, uninterrupted finish sought in high-value contemporary bathrooms, spa suites and hotel settings. With a carefully positioned linear drain, the shower floor can fall in a single direction, avoiding the multiple cuts associated with a central waste.

This layout is particularly effective where accessibility matters. A level floor removes the step over a tray and can be detailed for users with reduced mobility without making the room look institutional. It also works exceptionally well in compact bathrooms, where removing a tray edge and bulky enclosure can make the available floor area feel more generous.

The freedom is not only visual. A bespoke wet room can be shaped around an awkward roofline, a heritage property’s irregular walls, a freestanding bath or an unusually large shower footprint. It allows the designer to select the drain position, channel length, tile layout and screen arrangement rather than designing around fixed tray dimensions.

That freedom requires disciplined construction. The floor needs sufficient depth to create a reliable fall towards the drain while retaining adequate screed strength. As a guide, a shower area generally requires a fall of around 1:80 to 1:50, although the final geometry depends on the drain, tile size and manufacturer’s system requirements. A 1.2 metre run at 1:80 needs 15mm of fall before allowing for tile, adhesive and waterproofing layers.

In refurbishment work, this is often the deciding factor. Timber joists, existing pipe routes, door thresholds and floor levels all need reviewing before a wet room is promised. Recessing the drain and forming the floor may be entirely achievable, but it should be resolved at design stage rather than improvised once tiling begins.

Waterproofing is the structure behind the finish

Tiles and grout are not a waterproofing system. They are a decorative, hard-wearing finish that still requires a properly designed tanking assembly beneath. In a wet room, this usually means priming the substrate, applying a compatible waterproof membrane or sheet system, sealing corners and junctions, and integrating the drain flange into that waterproof layer.

The system must continue up walls, around penetrations and across vulnerable junctions. Particular care is needed at shower screens, niches, pipe outlets and transitions between different backgrounds. The quality that is visible at handover is only as dependable as the waterproofing concealed behind it.

This is why wet rooms suit projects where the construction scope allows for proper preparation. They should not be treated as a standard tiled floor with a drain added at the end.

Where a shower tray is the stronger choice

A shower tray is often the more efficient specification when a project needs certainty around floor build-up, budget or programme. The tray arrives with its falls already formed, its waste location defined and its surface ready for use. Once correctly bedded, levelled and connected, it provides a contained drainage area without requiring the entire bathroom floor to be rebuilt around a shower gradient.

This can be valuable on upper floors, particularly where the room has limited structural depth below the finished floor level. A slim tray may still be recessed for a near-level entry, but the required alteration is usually more localised than building a fully tanked, fully graded room.

For family bathrooms, a tray can also limit the spread of water. Children, powerful rainfall showers and everyday hurried use all create splash beyond the immediate shower zone. A screen and tray edge give the room a more defined boundary, reducing the amount of floor exposed to regular saturation.

Modern trays need not look ordinary. A low-profile stone-resin tray paired with frameless glass, large-format wall tiles and colour-matched silicone can deliver a refined result. For a tiled appearance without the full wet-room build-up, some systems also allow a tray to be tiled over, provided the approved installation method and tile loading limits are followed.

The trade-off is in visual continuity. Even a slim tray introduces a separate material or tiled shower platform. In a compact room, that line can be noticeable. In a larger bathroom, however, a tray can establish a deliberate shower zone and provide a crisp counterpoint to timber, stone-effect porcelain or decorative floor tile outside it.

Drainage, tiles and falls should be designed together

The best drainage choice is never made in isolation from the tile. A 600mm x 600mm porcelain tile behaves very differently to a 50mm mosaic on a shower floor. Small mosaics follow falls easily and offer plentiful grout joints for grip. Large-format tiles can look striking, but they require a drain arrangement and fall geometry that avoids excessive lipping, narrow cuts or awkward changes of plane.

A linear drain is often the natural partner for larger tiles because it permits a single fall. It can sit against the rear wall, at the entrance to the shower or along one side, depending on the layout and access for maintenance. Point drains can work well too, especially with mosaics or smaller formats, but create falls from several directions.

Slip resistance deserves equal attention. A polished porcelain may be appropriate on a bathroom wall but unsuitable for a shower floor. The tile’s manufacturer rating, the room’s expected use and the cleaning regime should all guide the selection. A private en suite and a high-traffic hotel spa have very different performance demands.

In both wet rooms and tray installations, waste capacity matters. The drain must remove water at a rate that matches the shower valve and head. A generous overhead shower can discharge far more water than a modest mixer shower, and poor flow through the waste will defeat even a perfectly formed floor.

Cost is about construction, not just the surface

A shower tray often costs less to install because it reduces the amount of floor preparation, waterproofing and graded screed work. That does not mean it is the budget option by default. Premium trays, recessed installation, bespoke glass and high-end brassware can still create a substantial specification.

A wet room typically commands greater investment because it involves more coordinated trades and more concealed technical work. Floor levelling, drain positioning, screed formation, tanking, tile setting and finish detailing must all be correct. On a luxury refurbishment, that investment may be justified by the finished architecture and the way the room performs over years of use.

The expensive mistake is choosing a system only by its initial price. Remedial works for failed waterproofing, inadequate falls or a poorly integrated drain can involve stripping out tiles, sanitaryware and floor construction. The true comparison is between a properly specified solution and the cost of correcting an under-specified one.

Questions to settle before choosing

Start with the floor construction. Is there enough depth for a drain, waste pipe and formed fall? Then consider who will use the room and how much water will reach the floor. A principal en suite used by two adults may suit an open wet room beautifully, while a busy family bathroom may benefit from the containment of a tray and screen.

Look closely at the proposed tile as well. Its size, thickness, slip resistance and cut pattern will influence whether a point drain, linear drain, tiled floor or tray is practical. Finally, decide whether level access is a requirement, a preference or simply part of the visual brief. This distinction can prevent unnecessary structural work or, equally, ensure a future-proof feature is not compromised.
